Few dietary patterns have been studied at the scale and duration of coffee consumption. The story that emerges from the data is consistent enough to be remarkable: drinkers, on average, simply outlive non-drinkers.
The Headline Numbers
The Annals of Internal Medicine published a sweeping 2022 analysis of 171,616 UK adults followed for a median of seven years. Those who drank 1.5 to 3.5 cups per day were up to 30 percent less likely to die during the study period — including, surprisingly, those who added a modest amount of sugar. The relationship held even after adjusting for smoking, exercise, BMI, and overall diet.
Earlier work by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, tracking more than 400,000 adults over 13 years, found similar reductions in mortality from heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory illness among regular coffee drinkers.
Cause-Specific Protection
A 2024 Italian cohort study extended the findings to specific causes of death, including a 22 percent reduced risk of dying from kidney disease and meaningful reductions in liver-related mortality. A separate analysis tied moderate consumption to lower rates of fatal melanoma and certain digestive cancers.
Decaffeinated coffee carries much of the same mortality benefit, suggesting caffeine itself is only part of the story.
The Mechanisms
The mechanisms are likely additive: improved insulin sensitivity, reduced systemic inflammation, better liver enzyme profiles, more favorable lipid panels, and the steady drip of polyphenols. Coffee, it turns out, is one of the most consistently protective beverages humans have ever brewed.
None of this is a license to chain-drink. The benefits plateau around four cups, and excessive intake brings its own costs. But for the moderate, daily drinker, the longevity data is quietly extraordinary.
