Coffee and the Heart: What Large Studies Can—and Cannot—Tell Us

The UK Biobank Findings

A 2022 UK Biobank analysis followed nearly 450,000 participants and reported lower observed rates of several cardiovascular outcomes among some coffee-drinking groups. Because this was observational research, it cannot show that coffee caused the difference.

Results varied by coffee type and participant group. Self-reported intake, residual confounding, and selection effects are important limits when translating cohort findings into personal decisions.

Chlorogenic Acids and Vascular Function

A separate 2024 paper in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition zeroed in on chlorogenic acids, a class of antioxidants abundant in lightly roasted beans. Subjects who drank three cups of high-chlorogenic-acid coffee daily for eight weeks showed measurable improvements in flow-mediated dilation — a direct measure of how responsive blood vessels are — comparable to those seen with a Mediterranean-diet intervention.

Short controlled studies can measure intermediate markers, but they do not by themselves establish fewer heart attacks or strokes. A biomarker result is not a product-level health claim.

The New Clinical Consensus

Personal advice depends on blood pressure, rhythm conditions, medications, pregnancy, sleep, and caffeine sensitivity. People with cardiovascular concerns should discuss intake with their clinician rather than treating a population study as a prescription.
